Cabinet Office
'The main Cabinet Office Internet site (www. cabinetoffice. gov. uk) changed to a new improved design on Monday 4 October 2004. This change delivers a key objective of the Better Internet Project, which was set up to provide a more effective and efficient Internet presence for the Cabinet Office.
The new design provides the Cabinet Office with an Internet site that meets the key web standards set out by the e-Government Unit. It reaches 'Triple A' compliance with the important WAI standards (Web Accessibility Initiative).
As part of the improvements the Cabinet Office decided to provide users with the option of speech enablement. Browsealoud was chosen for it's simplicity of use and the ability for the user to modify it for their own preferences.
Apart from the main Cabinet Office site it is also being used on:

Community Legal Services
Community Legal Service Direct provides free legal information, help and advice direct to the public via the website www. clsdirect. org. uk.
www. clsdirect. org. uk is highly regarded for its level of accessibility, regularly performing well in public sector league tables, which has led us to sign up to Browsealoud. Through Browsealoud we will enable even more users to access the site and provide access to justice to an even greater number of people. In view of the importance of equal access to the internet, we have also installed Browsealoud on our corporate website www. legalservices. gov. uk

British Council
www. britishcouncil. org, The British Councils website, provides a number of online services including the delivery of news, information, and learning resources, to a wide range of users all over the world. So its our duty to ensure these web-based resources are accessible to all users, regardless of disability.
Disabilities that can restrict people from accessing web content include blindness, colour blindness, dyslexia and lack of mobility. People with disabilities can need assistive technologies to view web pages, such as screen readers, alternative keyboards and mice, voice recognition software, and Braille displays. Web content needs to work with these technologies.
Here at the British Council, we have provided Browsealoud, a speech tool that reads aloud the contents of each page. This service helps users with low literacy and reading skills, where English is not the first language, dyslexic and with users who are mild visually impaired.
Our audience (mainly from overseas, with English as the second language) will benefit hugely from this service.

NI e-Government Portals
www. onlineNI. net the main Northern Ireland e-government portal site offers site visitors the option of having text on the site spoken aloud by means of Browsealoud.
Research has demonstrated that almost 17% of the population experience reading or literacy difficulties, which presents a barrier to accessing information for a significant part of the population. Browsealoud in e-government portals addresses this issue by widening digital inclusion and enabling public bodies to improve communication with many more citizens.
