Brick Brewing Co. Limited
Established in 1984, brick Brewing Co. Limited or Waterloo,
Ontario, was the first Microbrewery of its kind to start up in
Eastern Canada in recent decades, and is credited for starting
the present day beer renaissance in Canada.
With the use of traditional European brewing procedures,
including cold filtration, Brick Brewery produces several
distinctive all natural beers, each designed and targeted to
appeal to different taste profiles. In addition to these brands
the company is a liscenced brewer in Canada for Henninger Kaiser
Pils of Frankfurt, Germany, O.V. Splits fpr Molson Brewers and
Andechs of the Kloster Andechs Monastery in the Bavarian Alps.
Fix, a traditional Greek beer was added in 1996. Early in 1997,
Brick added the Conners family of premium quality ales and lagers
and the Laker family to its portfolio. At present, these
products are sold in key Ontario markets through Brewers Retail
Outlets, LCBO Stores and licensed establishments.
Jim Brickman, the founder of Brick Brewing Co., had a dream of
creating a small brewery that would produce a unique, quality
beer, different from the beers available in the Ontario
marketplace. In 1978, determined and enterprising, he began an
epic journey of research and discovery that would take him to 68
breweries and 29 countries around the world.
At that time the term 'microbrewery' was unheard of in Ontario,
and Jim Brickman's decision to open a small commercial brewery
was considered bold and daring. Despite many obstacles presented
by doubting bankers and bureaucrats, he ventured forth to build
his brewery, brick by brick.
In 1984 with plans finally approved, Mr. Brickman purchased a
three story building on Waterloo's King Street, a former
furniture factory, that was 145 years old. After an arduous
seven months it was converted into a traditional European
Brewhouse, and on December 18th, the first bottle of Brick
Premium Lager rolled off the bottling line. In that first year
10 employees helped to produce and ship 35,000 cases of beer.
Today, that Craft brewery in downtown Waterloo produces six
internationally acclaimed lagers, an ale and a bock, the addition
of new brands brings the total to fifteen lagers and four ales
sold in key markets around Ontario, through Brewers Retail
Outlets, Liquor Stores and selected licensed establishments.
The 'little brewery that could' has undergone numerous plant
expansions since 1984. Brick presently has the ability to
produce the equivalent of 1.2 million cases annually with future
expansion abilities to exceed 3 million cases at the present
facility. But at Brick, bigger isn't necessarily better.
Brewing an all-natural quality beer with the utmost of integrity
is their commitment to their customers. Beer I stheir business.
It's what they know how to do. They do it well and without
fanfare.
The pioneering strategy was to brew a distinctive all-natural
beer brewed to to strict German Bavarian purity Law. Traditional
European brewing methods and procedures are used along with the
finest Bavarian hops. The quality and shelf life of all Brick
beers is not maintained by pasturization, but rather through a
sophisticated cold sterile filtration process. Brick Brewing
Company was among the first to introduce this process to North
America.
