Barrie and Langille Architects Ltd. is a full-service
architectural consulting practice, based in Halifax, that has
delivered research, design and construction administration
services to the construction industry throughout Nova Scotia for
the past eighteen years. Although the firm's project portfolio
includes design for a variety of settings, - including
commercial, institutional, recreational, multi-unit residential
and civic - it has had a concentration of experience in the
design of educational facilities. Most recently, Barrie and
Langille Architects Ltd. has acted as prime consultant to the
largest technology-enriched school project ('smart school') ever
built in Nova Scotia under a partnership between the public and
private sectors.

Barrie and Langille Architects Ltd. provides project services in
the areas of master planning, space and facility programming,
architectural design, interior design, construction contract
administration, and coordination of the subconsultant disciplines
on the design team. Over the course of its practice, the firm
has provided these services to clients in the private,
governmental and non-profit sectors.

Barrie and Langille Architects Ltd. has entered into discussions
with engineering subconsultant firms, offering complementary
design services, to form a company that will offer a complete
package of design services for technology-enriched school
projects in developing countries. The educational sector in the
developing world is being targeted by the International Financial
Institutions for an infusion of funds to fundamentally change the
means by which education is delivered. The construction of new
schools is seen as a mechanism for improving access to education
and the introduction of technology into the school environment is
seen as a tool for improving the quality of education and making
students in the developing world more competitive in the global
economy.
To date, international marketing activities have been targeted at
investigating opportunities for delivering packaged design and
project services to education systems in the Caribbean and
Eastern Europe. Early signs point to a receptiveness on the part
of governments, particularly in the Caribbean Region, to a
strategy which can deliver all aspects of infrastructure design
for 'smart' schools through one consulting team. Discussions
have also identified potential private sector partners in local
markets for involvement in these educational initiatives.
