Axcan Pharma Inc. is a pharmaceutical company involved in the
research, development and distribution of innovative products,
mainly in the domain of gastroenterology.
We market a broad line of products sold by prescription or over
the counter for the treatment of a number of gastrointestinal
diseases. A total of 15 products are sold on the Canadian market
for the treatment of fairly common ailments, but inadequately
detected or treated to date, such as inflammatory bowel disease,
irritable bowel syndrome, cholestatic diseases of the liver, and
complications related to cystic fibrosis. Two of our products
are also marketed in the United States.
In December 1997, our long and exacting teamwork efforts were
rewarded as we received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) for URSO in the treatment of primary
biliary cirrhosis. We thus became one of only four Canadian
companies to have obtained authorization from the FDA for an
innovative medication. URSO is marketed in the United States by
Axcan Schwarz LLC, a joint venture created with Schwarz Pharma
US.
Lastly, Axcan Pharma is a 50% owner of Althin Biopharm Inc., a
company that supplies equipment and hemodialysis products
intended for patients suffering from renal failure.
The shares of Axcan are traded on the Montreal and Toronto Stock
Exchanges under the symbol AXP.

Products
Viokase
Amphojel / Mucaine
Non-prescribed antacids sold in phamracies. They are indicatef of
fast and efficient relief of gastric hyperacidity, as in
cases of peptic ulcers, gastritis, oesophagitis, heartburn and
acid indigestion. These products are available in tablets or
liquid dosage forms.
Helisal One Step
Rapid detection test for antibodies to Helicobacter pylori.
The Helicobacter pylori bacterium is a determining factor in the
cause of peptic ulcers or gastric irritation.
Salofalk
Salofalk is a 5-aminosalicylic acid under the form of rectal
suspension, suppository and tablet. It is used to reduce
symptoms of inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease
and ulcerative colitis.
Cortenema
Hydrocortisone retention enema used in ulcerative colitis.
Its action directly on the affected mucosa provides rapid,
immediate relief.
Protectaid
Contraceptive sponge. Studies showed that in addition to its
anti-conceptions property, the F-5 Gel, one of its active
ingredients, also demonstrated in-vitro, that it had anti-MST
and anti-HIV properties.
Urso
Urso is marketed in Canada for cholestatic liver diseases
(gallstones, primary sclerosing cholangitis) and is indicated in
the United States for the treatment of primary biliary
cirrhosis. It is the only drug approved by the FDA for this
indication.
Modulon/Lansoyl
Modulon (trimebutine tablets) is indicated to regulate and
provide symptom relief to patients suffering from irribable bowel
syndrome.
Lansoyl is a raspberry-flavoured laxative jelly indicated as an
intestinal lubricant for the relief of occasional transient
constipation.
Cystic Fibrosis
We market pancreatic enzymes (Viokase and Ultrase) in order to
aid digestion, specifically formulated multivitamin supplements
(ADEKs) and a hyper calory formula that may help weight
maintenance (Scandishake). We also market Flutter, a mucus
clearance device which helps loosen mucus obstructing the
airways.
