AFH is involved in two areas of research, contract research and strategic research. Strategic research studies includes developing guidelines and procedures to accurately test vaccines. Strategic research initiatives are being developed in several areas including targeted drug delivery, immune based therapy, enhanced drug absorption, mechanisms for growth enhancement, fish as experimental models and new pathogen challenge systems.

AFH operates in close association with the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI and has access to a number of services including a diagnostic lab. AFH includes a team of professionals with an in depth knowledge of fish pathology, microbiology, parasitology, toxicology, epimediology and other sciences that can help diagnose and monitor ecosystems or other environmental concerns.
