Bioremediation Of Groundwater Using A Batch Bioreactor System.
Aqua Terre was retained by a major petroleum company to recover and treat a plume encompassing approximately 5 million L of hydrocarbon impacted groundwater. Groundwater was recovered from several large diameter pumping wells using submersible pumps. The above-ground treatment system consisted of an oil/water separator and a customized 5 million L batch bioreactor complete with an air diffuser/injection system. Water was treated by adding oxygen, nutrients and micro-organisms. Off-gas was treated using a catalytic thermal convertor. In a period of approximately 8 weeks BTEX levels were degraded from approximately 12,000 g/L to less than 10 g/L. Treatment costs were less than $0.02/L.
Bioremediation Using A Biopile.
Aqua Terre was retained to design, operate and construct a soil biopile to remediate 9,000 tonnes of petroleum hydrocarbon impacted soil originating from a former fire-fighting training area located at a large airport in Ontario. Aqua Terre was responsible for all aspects of the project including engineering design, tender preparation, construction supervision, system optimization, pile operation/management, monitoring, verification sampling, and project management.
Although the original project duration was estimated at 1 year, after only 6 months 90% of the pile had been remediated to below the clean up criteria. Treatment costs were approximately $15/tonne (~4 times less than the cost of a conventional dig and dump approach).
Construction Of Dissolved And Non-aqueous Phase Interceptor/Collection Trench And Installation Of Groundwater Treatment System.
Aqua Terre was retained to investigate dissolved and non-aqueous phase chlorinated solvent contamination (DNAPL) beneath a large manufacturing facility located in Eastern Ontario. As part of the investigation a remedial plan was recommended and implemented. Aqua Terre was responsible for the engineering design, permitting and construction of a 100 m long by 10 m deep interceptor trench and 45 litre per minute groundwater/product recovery and treatment system.
The treatment system is comprised of a coalescing separator (DNAPL/LNAPL), air stripper, air blower, associated controls, and remote monitoring system. Aqua Terre was responsible for all compliance monitoring, regulatory liaison, system operation/maintenance, and reporting. After approximately six years 34 million L of contaminated groundwater (having chlorinated solvent concentrations up to 350 mg/L) have been recovered and treated.
