Annick Press was founded in 1975 (and incorporated in 1979) by Anne W. Millyard and Rick Wilks with a mandate to publish quality children's literature by Canadian authors. Between 1975 and 1983 we published only a handful of titles each year (between three and six). We rarely broke even on a book, though our titles were consistently well-reviewed. Over the past twelve years we have published between twenty-one and thirty-five titles annually. In total, we now have 291 books in print.
We specialize in full-colour picture books which we publish in English, though each year we are also publishing more and more of our list in French. (We have appointed a distributor in Quebec, Diffusion Dimedia Inc.) Our programme also includes a line of successful pre-teen novels, mini-books (ANNIKINS), a line of non-fiction titles, and some Spanish, Japanese and Chinese-language publishing.
The Directors of the company have written that, 'A successful children's book is one that feels authentic, that makes the child belong, poses questions, opens doors, encourages discussion, causes laughter and tears, and invites a sharing of emotions. It is also a book that allows the imagination to touch the sky.'
We feel very strongly that our editorial success, and whatever financial well-being we have enjoyed, are due to the fact we remain true to our editorial philosophy. We are an owner-managed company that places the highest premium on delivering quality publications that reflect the world of the child, and our titles are available at prices that are as reasonable as possible.
Annick Press Ltd. has a sales and marketing arrangement with Firefly Books Ltd. They have been our exclusive distributor in North America for eighteen years. We also have sales and marketing arrangements with distributors around the world.
Over the past year, our titles have again been recognized with many awards, both in Canada and abroad.
Internationally, we were awarded: 1) 1995 Bologna Ragazzi Fiction Prize, Bologna Children's Book Fair; 2) 6 titles were chosen for the 'American Bookseller's Pick of the Lists' by the ABA; 3) 1995 Storytelling World Award, International Reading Association; and 4) White Raven, International Youth Library, Munich.
