Alfred Waugh was the design architect for the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology, Merritt, B. C., This aboriginal post secondary facility has provided facility that reflects the native culture yet respects and responds to the natural environment. The staff and students are very pleased with the facility. The building has won numerous design awards including the Governor General's Awards of Architecture.
Alfred Waugh Architect is presently working with Squaxin island Tribe to develop a design concept for a Natural and Cultural Resource Facility. This midium size project will incorporate sustainable strategies as well as reflecting the architectural history of the Squaxin Island Tribe.
Recently I received notification that our campus is going to receive another award, this time from Washington, DC from the Society for College and University Planning and the American Institute of Architects' Committee on Education 'Excellence in Planning' and 'Excellence in Architecture' Awards Program. This Follows a number of other architectural awards including the British Columbia Lieutenant Governor's Award and the Canadian Governor's General's Award. I would like to acknowledge your tremendous contribution to NVIT through your work on our campus, Alfred.
During your involvement with Busby & Associates Architects, I know you were the lead Architect for the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology Project and involved with all its phases from schematic design to construction. Your Aboriginal background and sensitivity to the concerns of students, teachers, and Elders combined with sustainable objectives, knitted together energy efficienct strategies with local historical Aboriginal architecture. I understand this followed your belief that the First People are the custodians of the natural environment and should set precedents for development that respects the land.
Our campus continues to impress people whethter they come here as students, employees, or visitors. We take great pride in it. I will continue, as I have in the past, to strongly recommend you as an architect.
