Alberta College is governed by an independent Board of Governors drawn from a wide cross-section of the community. Established in 1903, Alberta College predates both the City of Edmonton and the Province of Alberta. It was founded by concerned citizens as the first post-secondary school in the area, on land bequeathed by pioneer George McDougall for educational purposes. The College initially had three departments: academics, commerce and music, and its main purpose was to prepare young students for university transfer to McGill University.
Whether providing university transfer programs in 1903, English as a Second Language courses to immigrants as early as 1917, or employment training programs to youth in the 1990's, Alberta College has always distinguished itself as innovative and resourceful, flexible and responsive to community needs.
This tradition continues today with the launch of the International Music Academy in 1998 and the creation of leading edge career programs in 1999. The International Music Academy is the first of its kind in Canada, providing opportunities for aspiring, talented musicians and contributing to the pride and strength of Edmonton. The career programs provide industry- driven training that is current and relevant, leading students to employment in less than a year.
These new initiatives complement Alberta College's vibrant, long-standing programs: an excellent alternative high school program, an innovative English as a Second Language program, and a dynamic Conservatory of Music.
The College is a city landmark - its award-winning building provides a positive learning environment in the heart of downtown Edmonton.
The future of Alberta College is bright with plans for expansion of programs and services.
