Treating The Wastewaters
The toxicity of cyanides on living organisms is very well documented. As environmental pressures continually increase, industries are being forced to completely eliminate these compounds from their effluent.
Several methods exist for the removal of cyanide. Most are based on the oxidation of cyanide into cyanate, which is further degraded to carbon dioxide and ammonia. An efficient method of doing this is through the use of the strong oxidation activity of singlet oxygen (lO2), an excited state of molecular oxygen produced by reacting hydrogen peroxide with sodium hypochlorite.
The oxidation of the cyanides can be controlled by classical titrimetric analysis, or it can be automatically monitored during treatment by using a gold-calomel electrode couple to measure the oxidation-reduction potential.
If desired, this detection of the end of the reaction could be used to command the proportioning pump, in order to minimize the chemical consumption and increase the reliability and safety of the operation.
The use of the hydrogen peroxide-sodium hypochlorite couple to destroy cyanides in wastewater presents many advantages: it allows the end-point of the reaction to be monitored by using a gold-calomel electrode couple; it can be economical since it is capable of oxidizing cyanides in effluent with a pH of 9.5, thus avoiding adjustments to the pH before and after treatment.; it decreases the amount of salt by-product to a greater extent than is the case by using Caro's acid or sodium hypochlorite on its own (50% less); it has a very high reaction rate which considerably reduces the operating space; it is easy to handle and easy to use; it requires no catalyst thereby eliminating the potential for another source of contamination; when properly used, it ensures greater safety because of the elimination of potential cyanogen chloride emissions.
