AVC Inc.
AVC Inc. is a private company and is a wholly-owned subsidiary
of the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI). The company
has four divisions: Atlantic Fish Health, Canadian Aquaculture
Institute, Cardigan Fish Hatchery, and Pork Production
Innovation Group.
AVC Inc. also provides consulting services to clients both
within the University and externally. These services are very
broad in scope and include business services such as contract
negotiation and management; and scientific analysis of specific
problems principally in the areas of aquaculture, fish health,
swine production and the enviroment.
Centred at UPEI's Atlantic Veterinary College, AVC Inc. has
direct access to research facilities and works closely with
university faculty on many projects.
Atlantic Fish Health(AFH) provides contract research services to
pharmaceutical, vaccine and fish feed companies around the
world, in the areas of fish health and diet performance as it
pertains to the aquaculture industry. AFH has direct access to
the research facilities within the Atlantic Veterinary College
and works closely with faculty on many projects.
The Canadian Aquaculture Institute provides continuing education
and training to the aquaculture industry around the world.
Cardigan Fish Hatchery produces salmonids for enhancement
programs across Prince Edward Island. Research on various
aspects of existing and new species is carried out at the
Hatchery in collaboration with the Atlantic Veterinary College
and other institutions.
Pork Production Innovation Group operates a 1,000-head swine
grow-out facility with 50% of the animals on slats and 50% in a
deep bedded system. Scientists conduct research in nutrition,
manure management, behaviour and housing, under contract to feed
companies, groups interested in the environment and government
agencies. Pork Production Innovation Group is also investigating
innovative value-added products for niche markets.

Short Courses
Courses are custom designed for clients on subjects relating
from disease diagnosis and treatment to basic lobster biology.
Instruction includes classroom, lecture, laboratory sessions and
field trips. Courses can be designed to meet the needs of a
particular group. These would include private sector, industry,
research scientists, veterinarians, technicians, aquaculturists
and firms or government departments providing services to
industry.
Workshop / Seminars
Workshops and seminars can be designed to meet specific needs of
the aquaculture industry. Workshops/seminars have been provided
in nutrition, vaccination and disease as well as the economics
of aquaculture.
Educational Video
Two educational videos are available for the aquaculture
industry. One is 'Diagnostic Post Mortem in finfish Aquaculture'
which is 50 minutes and the second is 'Bath Treatment in
Aquaculture' which is 30 minutes. Presently a third video 'Sea
Lice' is under production and is expected to be available in
June 2003. Current videos are available in English, Spanish,
Chinese and are also available in PAL and NTSC format.
