Environmental Profile
This company, located in Qubec city, is well know in the aerospace industry. It has diversified into the environmental field which represents 5% of their total sales of $17 million of which 90% is exported. In 1993 the company presented a paper at the Municipal Waste Combustion Conference in Virginia, called An FT-IR Based CEMS. This paper highlighted the aspects of the Fourier Transform Infrared technology and its applications in continuous emissions monitoring systems. Bomem has developed, in Qubec, an analyzer using Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) technology which performs the analysis on a hot/wet basis, thereby maintaining the sample integrity. This sampler is a key development in the continuous monitoring of waste incinerators, since the technology, Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), allows for the analysis of water soluble compounds, such as HCl.

Continuous monitoring of emissions from a waste incinerator is one of the most challenging applications for a gas analyzer. A classical CEM incorporates a sample conditioning unit which cools the sample gas to remove the moisture prior to performing the analysis. These monitors are unable to analyze water soluble components, such as HCl, because these are dissolved in the condensate. Bomem, Hartmann & Braun does its monitoring with an analyzer that uses Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) technology so that these problems can be avoided. Since an analysis can be made on a hot/wet basis there is no loss of water soluble components.
The analyzer is connected directly to the emission source with a heated probe and sample line. It simultaneously measures the concentration of SO2, NO, NO2, CO, NH3, and HCl in the presence of up to 30% H2O (by volume) in the sample stream.
